Where to Stay in Seoul: Neighborhoods Compared for First-Timers

Last checked: Oct 2026

Quick comparison

Area Best for Getting around Feel
Myeongdong First-timers, shopping, street food Very central; subway Line 4 Busy and touristy
Jongno & Insadong Palaces, traditional Seoul Central, several subway lines Calmer, teahouses and galleries
Hongdae Nightlife, live music, budget stays Direct airport train (Hongik Univ.); Line 2 Lively and loud at night
Gangnam Business, upscale shopping Good subway links; south of the river Modern and spread out
Seongsu Cafés, design shops, pop-up stores Subway Line 2 Trendy former factory district

Myeongdong

Seoul’s best-known shopping district and the default choice for a first visit. You’re within a short ride of most sights, and there are hotels at every price level. It’s touristy, which is exactly why it’s easy: signs, staff and menus are used to visitors.

Jongno and Insadong

Close to Gyeongbokgung Palace, Bukchon Hanok Village and Insadong’s street of teahouses, galleries and craft shops. Good if you want to walk to historic sights in the morning before the crowds. Evenings are calmer than in Myeongdong or Hongdae.

Hongdae

The area around Hongik University is known for buskers, indie music, clubs and cafés, and for its weekend Free Market. There are lots of guesthouses and budget hotels, and the all-stop airport train stops at Hongik Univ. Station, so you can get here from Incheon Airport without changing trains. If you’re a light sleeper, pick a place a few streets away from the main strip.

Gangnam

Modern and polished, with big shopping streets such as Garosu-gil and the COEX complex. It’s a longer ride to the palaces and old markets north of the river, so it makes most sense if your plans are mostly in the south of the city.

Seongsu

A former handmade-shoe and factory district that has turned into Seoul’s café, design-shop and pop-up store neighborhood. It feels more local than the big tourist areas.
