What Seongsu is like

Seongsu was an industrial area of workshops and warehouses. Its Handmade Shoe Street once produced 80% of Korea’s handmade shoes, and Seongsu Station still has a shoe theme.

Since the 2010s, old factories have been turned into cafés, galleries and shops. Today, in Visit Seoul’s words, “top brands eagerly set up pop-up shops and flagship stores” here. You’ll find:

  • Café Street in Seongsu-dong 2-ga
  • Atelier Street, between Seoul Forest and the district sports center
  • Converted factory venues such as Seongsu Yeonbang, used for pop-ups and markets
  • Daelim Changgo, a former rice mill turned gallery space

Pros

  • Cafés and shops with a creative, local feel.
  • Seoul Forest next door: a huge park, open 24 hours and free.
  • A good walk: VisitKorea’s suggested route runs from Seoul Forest past Daelim Changgo and Café Street to the Handmade Shoe Street, about 2 km.
  • Line 2 goes straight to Hongdae, Euljiro 1-ga (for Myeongdong) and Gangnam.

Cons

  • Weekend crowds: popular pop-ups draw long queues. In May 2026 a pop-up event was suspended after the city estimated 40,000 people had arrived in Seongsu by noon.
  • Further from the palaces: Gyeongbokgung and Bukchon need a transfer.

FAQ

Is Seongsu a good place to stay in Seoul?

Yes, if you like cafés, design shops and a more local feel, or you've already seen the main sights. For a first sightseeing trip, Myeongdong or Jongno keep the palaces closer.

Is Seongsu crowded?

On weekends, yes, especially around brand pop-up stores. A pop-up event in May 2026 was even suspended after an estimated 40,000 people turned up by noon. Weekday mornings are much calmer.

How do I get to Seongsu?

Subway Line 2 to Seongsu or Ttukseom Station, or the Suin-Bundang Line to Seoul Forest Station. Line 2 also goes directly to Hongdae, Euljiro (for Myeongdong) and Gangnam.
